Ostrogothic Kingdom Fake?

3 posts • 112回閲覧
Hello everyone,

I want to hear your opinion about this coin. There are a lot of fakes of Ostrogothic Kingdom coins on eBay, and this one may be one of them. The letter "S" on both sides is mirrored, which I really don't like. Can it be an imitation of early ages? Or is it a modern fake?

Thank you

I cannot imagine that piece is real. The eBay example has very 'rounded' characters, unlike genuine Ostrogothic types, and the dimensions are way too high (1.5 grams; 14 millimetres). For a Theodahad type, this has a 1/4 Siliqua design with the dimensions of a 1/2 Siliqua.

And I would also say it is not an imitation from an uncertain Germanic tribe. To me, this just looks like a modern counterfiet.

Thank you! I had the same impression, but wanted to double check with someone. I didn't bid on it, but it is a good lesson for the future.
