Wilhelm II German 1 pfennig with shamrock?

5 posts

This coin is very dark but I hope the shamrock over the normal location of the year is clear enough to see. Does anyone have any information about this coin? Hours spent searching the web yielded nothing other than shamrocks are considered lucky by Germans. It is a copper coin that came from my elderly cousin’s estate. My German family has been on Galveston Island since the late 1800's.
Welcome to the site. :)
May have been made into a pendant, as part of the loop is remaining above both images ...

On the reverse is lettering DEUTSCHES REICH above 1 and PFENNIG below. Like you say
where the date was on the right the shamrock is there; it seems to stand out more, so maybe
someone skillfully added it over an existing coin (and made it into a pendant). Especially as
there is corrosion more in the shamrock area, so however it was done has reacted with the elements over time. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces853.html [1890-1916]

Thanks for the reply! I ran out of characters, so I couldn’t post the diameter. About 17mm. I guess it’s value is in finding someone who wants a “doctored” coin?
Thanks. I amended my reply above, and with different images. Maybe it is 'trench art'? :)
I did not know 'shamrocks are considered lucky by Germans'; so that explains one on
this 1948 token I own with a pig beside a shamrock ...

Sounds absolutely plausible. I’m finding some truly amazing items in my cousin’s estate that are nowhere to be found on the web. Numerous pendant coins. Thanks for pointing that out on this one. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
