Numista rarity ratings

How are the Numista's rarity ratings generated? For instance 1926 South Africa's 1/2 gold Sovereign is rates 77 at 808K of them being struck, when the 1/2 cent PL 1975 is rated at 7 with only 18K mintage. To me the rarity should be related to the mintage numbers and not to the metal the coin is struck on. Any thoughts?
The rarity rating is generated only by how many Numista members have recorded that coin in their collection; for example a 100 means no members have it recorded, a 97 means one member does, a 95 means two do, and so on.

The number is also for the entire page, as in all the dates of that type, rather than for any particular date; there has already been plenty of discussion over how accurate (or not) the index is:

Though one has to wonder whether some Numista members are truly very, very, very rich ... ... or liars:

I like the index, but I have to wonder if it is misnamed. Maybe it should be labelled a commonality index or something.

As a fairly new collector, I find it interesting to see what other people have in their collections here. This index gives me an idea of what people have / like to collect.
