Corsica

The coins of Corsica have always been of special interest to me.

When the Republic of Texas joined the United States in 1845, the state decided to name the next county that it formed in honor of Jose Antonio Navarro, a Tejano politician who had worked for Texas independence and had signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Navarro County is located about 50 miles south of Dallas (when originally formed, it covered what is now 10 counties of Texas).

They asked Mr. Navarro what they should name the county seat of his county, and he named it Corsicana, in honor of his father's birthplace.

I grew up 22 miles east of Corsicana, and lived in Corsicana from 1983-2000.

The Numista catalog indicates medal rotation for this type, but I have a 1764 that is medal rotation, and one that is coin rotation. (My comment was added to the page today.)
Corsica is a fascinating place; a bit of fun trivia is that the island was only annexed into France in 1768, less than a year before the birth of a certain artillery colonel you might have heard of. :°
