Lithuania 1664: Two-Headed Horseman??

7 posts
I had trouble understanding the design of this Lithuania 1 schilling 1664, until I realized that the coin had been struck twice, with nearly a 180 degree rotation between strikes. You can see the knight's upraised sword at 11 o'clock and again at 3 o'clock.

The first strike was off-center; the date is partially visible at the edge of the coin.

On the obverse, AN of IOAN is clearly visible on both sides of the coin.

It is not Lithuanian, but Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth

There's the copper Lithuanian shilling 1664 with doubled die. You can read the name of king IOAN on obverse twice and the reverse picture is doubled also.
There were two different monetary systems in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Treasury of Grand Duchy Lithuanian and Treasury of Polish Kingdom minted different coins, and Lithuanian coins (with Lithuanian Knight on reverse) circulated in territory of Grand Duchy Lithuanian, when Polish coins (with White Eagle, Polish Coat of Arms on reverse) circulated in territory of Polish Kingdom. Do you believe that this coin was struck with a doubled die? If so, there would be other coins that are identical to it.

I believe that it has been double struck--the planchet was struck once (offcenter), then restruck more correctly centered. The second strike obliterated part of the details of the first strike.
There are so many variations of the Ioan Casimir coins, regulary new variants are found....
