Hi
Upon stumbling on this thread, and seeing this picture, I am starting to ask myself, why the heck is the field "Description with keywords" in section "Edge", still not available only as option selecting field. OK, one option can be added as "Other" with additional field for manual artistic lettering input (popping up only when other is selected).
Further more, all those threads where people ask the difference between milled and reeded and plain and smooth would be redundant .
Best regards
I agree, but we would still have to decide which to use as the default, e.g. the Numista plebiscite on whether to use the word smooth/plain was very close.
This feature will be very helpfull to correct inconsistency between French and english.
Sometimes we have an info like Smooth or reeded in english or in french and nothing on the other side, that's a shame because we have the info but as it's not a drop down list like metal, the info is only availlable in 1 language.
If we look at what have been done with metals I guess the work on this topic should be easier.
A clear guideline with drawing (as already provided by Sjoelund) can be convert into a Numisdoc and if we attache a hyperlink to the numis doc (the same way we do with Engravers presentation) then it will solve a lot of confusion. And as metal, new thread can be open to request the addition of a new type where people can discuss about it based on pictures by example.

Hi
No need for a plebiscite. One option could be "smooth/plain", capturing both words at the same time.
Hello, can I ask without wanting to bother anyone, how can it be that this improvement is not already implemented?
It is obvious that it is a clear improvement for Numista and that it would prevent each user/referee from using different words for the same concept. In addition, it facilitates the choice of the type of song by users.
Is it that administrators do not like the concept? Is it difficult to implement technically speaking? In short, what is the problem why, more than 4 years after this proposal was made, it has not yet been implemented?
I repeat, it is simple curiosity and at no time do I intend for anyone to feel upset.

I guess it's because of the existing mess we have in this field … To drill down that to only few options will request a huge amount of work …
This improvement is on my todo list for 2023. The only reason it is not implemented yet is that converting the existing field for each coin will be time consuming.

where there is no edge description, when no edge description is indicated for the coin, I think it'll be correct just to insert “Plain”, which is the default value, I guess for most coins, since it's the easiest way to strike a coin.
This could definitely be done by Robot and maybe let Robot leave its footprint in script(s) “Robot was here”?
add two new edges “Segmented reeding with embossed pattern”/“Segmented reeding with incuse pattern” and write the design, “Vine”, in a textbox. In other word, mix these types Embossed pattern Incuse pattern Segmented reeding

I agree. If language is English (en) both words can be written. Later, if “en” splits into en-GB/US (like es-ES/Latin now), this option (the words displayed) will be fixed (only one data will be saved in the database, regardless of language).

I just had a look at Afghanistan, where the first coin

It can be for ancient coins/exonumia. In more actual items… can have an especial edge but with not data.

The idea is added a select box button with options https://en.numista.com/catalogue/edges.php (and perhaps add more to this page) and add another option “Other” and display a text box., in order to write special designs. Correct?
You may have already thought of this...
At beginning the current edges (written in “Description with keywords”, a textarea, multi line text box) can be converted in an only line field with all lines and languages used now. For example:
N#346981 has data in English (Reeded) and in French (Striée). Can be mixed in only one line:
(en) Reeded / (fr) Striée
I do not find a multi line text in this field but if there a coin/exonumia with “Edge > Description with keywords” =
This a multi line description of the edge of a coin
can be convert new lines to spaces, and get an only one line:
(en) This a multi line description of the edge of a coin
These text of one line can be the option “Other”.
Along the time, users, referees and robot can help to convert many of these options “Other” to other some option of the list. For example,
Also, can be created a page with all “other edges” for search matches with the edges of the list. This page can be show by all members, only by referees… If all members can be see this page, can create in forum Numista coin catalogue a new type of request (“Request about edges”) for convert an “other" edge in an option.
Some options can need another text field for write more data: description of pattern, design stamped…
Wanted & swap list (euro coins & world coins, exonumia and banknotes circulated) https://goo.gl/AQjfKp - I have euro & world CC coins for swap.
I deviated a lot from 2023 plan. We ended up having dropdown lists for denominations and issuing entities, which was not planned, but edges is not started yet and it won't be done this year. Another candidate for dropdown lists (and enhanced associated data) would be the series.
Edges are quite easy to translate automatically (at least the basic cases) and search by edge type is not critical, that's why it was de-prioritized.
