A person on our coach tour of the Balkans has stated that she has a 1 Protea coin from South Africa and she asked if I knew the current value.
I cannot find any of these coins on Numista, so its down to the members. She cannot remember the date, but states it has wild animals on it.
Tour ends in 7 days, so an answer before next Saturday would be much appreciated. In Belgrade today.
... not the thing she's talking about? So, gold bullion.
Oh! Wait... I see there is also protea silver bullion, which would be worth much less. So, if you scroll down the South African silver bullion, you'll find a number of them.
It would be quite helpful if you had any other information other than '1 Protea' like, is it Silver or Gold, is it 1 Rand (Protea is not a currency, it is the SA national flower emblem and there are literally dozens of Protea issues). Could it be this one https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces104036.html with animals on, we are really stabbing in the dark here.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
The coin is 24ct gold with wild animals, such as elephant, lion and possibly a cheetah on one side. Not too sure what is on the other side, but it is most likely a Protea flower.
She states that it is a 1ounce coin and has full certification, which she does obviously not have with her.
Sorry for sketchy information, but relying on the owner for details, which she is struggling to remember.
Think I might have found it, a 1994 Conservation Commemorative Protea Gold 1oz (22ct) with Protea on the obverse and leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo and lion on the reverse:
This coin is part of the "Gold Bullion Protea Coinage". These coins are made with denominations 1 and 1/10 Protea:
Unfortunately no pictures in Krause but according to the description it's the same coin as radrick007 shows in the link. As seen on that picture there is not really a denomination on the coin, just "1 oz", but because COINMAN1 is talking in his initial post about a "1 Protea" coin, I think the coin he's looking for is the "1 oz" coin and not the "1/10 oz" coin.
Anyway, according to the descriptions in Krause, I think radrick007 is right and the requested coin is one of these two and probably the big one.
I have shown the lady who owns the coin, the links and pictures that you believe is the one she has. She is not 100% sure, as she has not looked at it for some time.
When we return to England after our Balkans tour, she has promised to send photograph. I still believe that the 1oz Protea, with the wild animals depicted on the reverse is the coin she has, as no other coin has anything like it.
Updating our progress. Two nights in Sarajevo. Viewing the city tomorrow then of to Split on Wednesday.
