Sounds a bit ludicrous to me... how do you make off with a 100kilo loot so easily without setting off an alarm. I'm assuming they didn't somehow take it down the ladder and through the same window they came in. Sounds like an inside job to me.
the USD value in article is solely for the market value given gold weight; face value is only stated as "$1 million".
face value is indeed in canadian dollars, and if you don't plan to steal one of the 4 remaining you can still buy one here...today market value given by Royal Canadian Mint is "only" around $4 millions USD or $5.35 millions CAD

Numista rarity rating of 95, so at least 2 Numista members are claiming ownership of the coin! Perhaps we should pass their names onto the police
One of them has a comment to it "I know an owner of this coin...", while the other one has this: "
Will trade for equivalent of lincoln wheat pennies"
Am I reading the article wrong? The very first original coin was made at RCM.
“So then it became a product that was made on demand and customers who made a non-refundable deposit on the coin had one manufactured for them,” Reeves said. A total of five coins were produced and sold that way, he said. The one stolen in Germany is one of those five.
Does not this statement mean that there are 6 in total?

The way I understood it is that now 4 remain. Apparently the RCM has a mandate to mint up to 10. However, 4 were sold so far (not including the original one). Atleast that is what i recall from the tour a couple years ago at he Ottawa mint

Yeah, that was my understanding so far. I guess the article is a bit misleading with this regard.

yesterday in the Globe and Mail : "A Royal Canadian Mint spokesman said five of the giant coins were sold while the sixth remains in a vault in Ottawa."
then I guess this makes 6 in total including the original one; now 4 remaining on "public market" plus the original one in Ottawa.

Even if you don't understand German, have a look at this video where you see how the coin is moved around. You also see the building where it was stolen from.
It reminds me of a solid gold tub in Japan that was stolen. I think if you have a huge piece gold, you shouldn't tell anyone. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/18932146
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
