Advice on 1848 (Essai?) 10 Centimes

5 posts
Hello,

Recently came across this coin and am looking for any information some one here might have on it. It seems to be an 1848 pattern (essai?) for a French 10 Centimes piece.

I'm totally in the dark on this coin as to catalogue info, value, potential rarity, etc...

Here is the coin in question:

While trying to research it a bit, I found a slew of different designs and combinations of those designs when I searched "10 Centimes 1848." What helped narrow it down was the name underneath the neck on the obverse - ROGAT.

After adding that to the Google queries I had been entering, I was able to find another example on cgb.fr:

http://www.cgb.fr/concours-de-10-centimes-essai-en-cuivre-par-rogat-premier-concours-deuxieme-revers-1848-paris-vg-3152-sup-60,fmd_310236,a.html

Here is the photo of it in case that link doesn't work:

That one looks to be in slightly better shape than mine, and is being priced at 160€ ($170 USD). Of course, I clicked the links to the few different catalogues on that page, but was directed to a page which gave me little information.

So, I suppose my most pressing questions are in regards to my coins rarity and value and whether or not some one might be able to direct me to a book or catalogue with more information on it and perhaps even something which would explain all the patterns I found for that year.

Also, do all of these particular issues have that buckle at 11-12 on the reverse?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

1830 and 1848 where dates where the french government was looking for new coin designs and new artists who could create the new coins.
During these two years a coin design competition was created where several pattern coins where created with different denominations and also using different metals (Aluminum, Copper, Silver...).
The silver coins in high grade have very high catalogue values and are very sought after.
They are generally quite scarse and difficult to find but they do pop up from time to time at auctions.
Here some examples from Numista catalogue:

Here is an article on these coin design competitions, its in french but you can use an online translator for translating the text. http://www.economie.gouv.fr/files/files/directions_services/caef/Documents/Expositions_virtuelles/monopoles/4-10.html

By finding that listing on cgb.fr you've answered most of your own questions. The red oval to the left shows the different catalog numbers, I'm only used to seeing the middle one which is short for Mazard 1353 (Jean Mazard cataloged French essais, but I've never been able to find a copy of his book). The red oval to the right indicates this is a Rarity 1 essai, as far as I have been able to determine the scale goes from R1 to R3, with R1 being the most common. I would search the auction sites for sales information to better determine value.
Thanks, Steve! Obviously I checked out the catalogue links, but they were quick summarizations in French. Even if I had Google translated it, it wouldn't have been what I was looking for. I suppose I was looking for an actual catalogue entry on the coin rather than just a catalogue name and number. Googling the names of the catalogues in those links on the cgb.fr page didn't find me any translations of the books.

Thank you Apuking, as well! That is fascinating that these patterns were part of a competition. I wonder if there was a prize more than getting your design on your nation's coins.

A while ago, tried asking on the French part of Numista if anyone had the Mazard text or any of the other references, but I didn't make much headway.
