I was also thinking of the four caliphs, but the name on the left doesn't look like any of them. Is it even Arabic? At the bottom, with some imagination, one can read the name of Omar, if indeed one should look for one of the four caliphs!
I think those are just symmetric decorative patterns; the one on the bottom seems to be the same as on the left side.

And the writing ...beats me
