I am hoping that someone will recognise this and be able to give me some idea as to its identity

Roy as usual nice coin . I like looking at what you put up, can help but nice to look at, and I learn a lot. But I think you will have more luck on the French side with this one

Thanks for the suggestion. How do I place it on the "other" (French) side?

I have sailed my English galleon across the channel and entered the French domain with the help of Google translate.

This is a new venture for me so I will endeavour to be diplomatic and will use google translate to report my progress back to the English site.

No doubt Xavier will keep an eye on me

Hey Roy looks like they got a good start on it . I would have never thought Germany. I have been on the French side a few times. And they have always been kind to me. A lot of good people there. I usually start my French is very poor, for gave me. And they been very kind to me. And helped me out. Very nice coin , the one guy would like to swap you for it.

The reverse is very similar to
Swiss cantons - Solothurn - Frank (1805-1850)
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24223.html
the cross is different but in the same style of reverse. Also this canton borders France so French influence may make sense, hopefully that helps a little.
On the French side I found this request from three years ago - both sides similar to yours ...
https://fr.numista.com/forum/topic12008.html

A coin of Louis XII of St-Pourçain
which gives more similar images ...
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=coin+Louis+XII+of+St-Pour%C3%A7ain&biw=1280&bih=923&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiFpsbL37vJAhUBFxQKHQZmCTcQ_AUIBigB

Then also similar to this https://fr.numista.com/catalogue/pieces30979.html
from this page https://fr.numista.com/forum/topic24408.html
though the centre of the cross is not the same exactly; and another like that I have seen described as
'This example is believed to have been made in Tournai, at the time a French city (today it is part of Belgium) - this style dates from circa 1415 - 1497'

The reverse is described as
'a quatrefoil cross centered in a quatrefoil decorated with four finials'
or ' triple stranded straight cross fleuretty in four arched tressures'.

I have also seen similar to yours but with different obverse Lombardic script lettering.
Obverse: Three fleur-de-lis in dotted shield within dotted border, garbled legend around.
Reverse: Large floriated cross in quatrefoil.

Finally, this is the closest I could find ...
http://gilliscoins.com/coinage/jetons/wj7423.htm
and I agree with them that it has a fictitious obverse lettering, as I could not work it out.
This is as far as I got; green for probably and brown for maybe ...

+ D?NANTAT ? IT ?? DETAI so is jumbled random letters, like was on some tokens of that time.
Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
Perhaps you should look in the Nurnberg jetons.....

Thanks for all the links and the fantastic artistry. It has brought the Jeton back to life and given me a lot of avenues to explore. I have a number of others so I may be able to identify them as well.

There are so many way to write AVE MARIA GRATIA PIA, that we could guess m"ARIA" like on this one:
