Hello,

please create a new issuer sub-section under Greece > Ionian Islands for the following banknotes pages, which are wrongly under “Ionian Islands, United States of the (1815 - 1864)”:

N#210208

N#210531

N#219997

N#210535

N#209430

N#210540

N#210542

N#267153

Thanks!

Should be under ‘Italian Occupation of the Ionian Islands’.

Aidan.

Hello,

We need a section for when the Ionian Islands were part of Greece (1860s-date), and then the Axis occupation during WWII should be listed as a ruling authority under it. I do not believe the occupation era should be its own issuer, just as any other country that was occupied.

Once the new issuer is created I will be better organizing the pages for the Ionian Islands, as the whole currency/ruling authority/issuer situation is a bit of a mess currently.

King George II of Greece was the ruling authority.

Italian Occupation of the Ionian Islands was a period in history.

We already have WWI/WWII occupation listed as a ruling authority in Belgium, Guernsey, Poland, etc., as well as Greece itself. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that the Italian occupation was the primary (though not necessarily only) ruling authority of the Ionian Islands at the time.

“When heads of state are not individually represented on numismatic or exonumia items, the ruling authority can be the form of government (for example, free imperial city), a specific government or governing body (for example, second republic), or a distinct historic period (for example, German occupation, sede vacante).”

Occupations should NOT be regarded as ruling authorities - but as historical periods.

But, aren't occupation eras already listed as “periods”? Internally, Numista still considers them ruling authorities. Please see the following pages:

N#512 Period: German occupation (1914-1918)

N#296482 Period: German occupation (1940-1945)

N#209300 Period: Axis occupation (1941-1944)

The section of the Numista guidelines I linked previously still applies here.

I feel like we're getting distracted by minor differences in terminology. The main issue at hand is that an entire issuer is still missing, which covers the era of the Ionian Islands as part of Greece (1860s-date), including a brief Axis occupation.

The ruling authority for both Guernsey & Jersey from 1940 to 1945 remained King George VI, even though they were the only parts of the British Commonwealth that were occupied by Nazi Germany.

Belgium still had King Albert I & King Leopold III during both German occupation periods as its reigning monarchs.

The same goes for Denmark (KIng Christian X) & Norway (King Haakon VII)  during World War II.

What if we eliminate all of the sub-issuers of the Ionian islands, which seem to be periods as far as I can tell.

Then we would have

Greece > Ionian Islands

  • Venetian Rule to 1797 (period) (I do not see any coins dated prior to 1700)
  • Septinsular Republic 1800-1807 (period)
  • United States of the Ionian Islands 1815-1862 (period)
  • Italian Occupation 1941-1943 (period)

Any other issues by the Ionian Islands after 1862 would presumably have as ruling authority the soverign of Greece.

Thoughts?

I like it, sounds like a reasonable solution.

The coins & banknotes of the Ionian Islands under British rule should be listed under the relevant monarchs of the U.K..

Aidan.

We can list them during the United States of the Ionian Islands Period.
