Sigis III Vasa ORT 1621 PRVS:MAS Help!

8 posts • 93回閲覧

Hello all,

I hope someone can help me.  I am new to Numista and to coin collecting but I recently purchased a coin and I would really welcome some expert advice on its Shatalin/Kopicki/Rarity/Value?

1621. Approx 7.3g. c29.9mm diameter. Silver.

SIGIS III PRVS:MAS coin with Sigismund III Vasa looking very fine. 😁

The inscription from my point of eye is-

SAM:LIV:NECO:SVE (arrow & 2 stars) GOT•VAN:Q:HRI:R

what is interesting is GOT• rather than GOT:

SIGIS•IIID: etc.

I hope the pictures reflect how clear the details are.

Looking forward to hearing from you experts out there! Thank you…..

Please always include the link to the coin in question, I’ll do it here for you:

N#170608

With hand-engraved dies comes small differences in vaieties. The reason for • instead of : is such a difference. Your variety seems to be kopicki 1271 as seen in the comments, which doesn’t have a colon after GOT or SIGIS. The colon after GOT actually only seems to be present of half of the varieties.

:)

Wow, thank you Marc…..I’m so grateful.

No problem, always nice to help out a newbie! 😊

 I saw this page earlier

https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/poland-ort-km-37-1628-cuid-1094572-duid-1551168

which also shows  GOT·  on the coin.

Confusingly there is 1621 at the top of the page,

yet further down it only shows these

namely 1622 1623 1624 years.

Thanks ZACUK.  My coin is definitely 1621 and the numbers feature across the centre/middle rather than top or bottom.  This coin you've included a link to ends in PRVS:M whilst mine is PRVS:MAS.  I’ve gone armound the twist trying to match it to coins in the Shatalin catalogue (pages 13-16 I think).

Ive checked Kopicki 1271 and it appears they differ to my one (not hurt the GOT• aspect), I am so grateful though for the direction.

There is now a specialty catalog for Poland orts called Shatalin (or Szatalin) and nobody is using Kopicki any more, unfortunately.

I think the key features of your coin are the Obverse legend ending in PRVS MAS (not PRV MAS, PRVS M, or any other permutation), and beginning with SIGIS III (not SIGI).  And then, as you point out the single dot after GOT, rather than a colon (:).  I don;t have Kopicki (though I probably should) to see which type fits.

But as pointed out by Marc16, there are MANY die varieties for the Sigismund orts.  For 1621 with SIGIS … PRVS MAS obverse , and GOT .  reverse here are a few:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12353503  Shatalin 21-II- 18, but the band on the crown reverse does not match

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7365705  Shatalin BD21-55.  Possibly an exact obverse die match, with the tilted S in MAS and I think all same punctuation.  The reverse is also very close, with the VE in SVE tied together, the dot after GOT.  Sold for 170 euro.

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5969778  Shatalin BD21-27, but no punctuation between PRVS MAS

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5661518  Shatalin BD31-32, but having a colon between III and D obverse.

So, I would class yours as a likely Shatalin BD21-55?

On value, many of these orts were struck weakly, unevenly, off-center.  So any that are missing these problems command a premium (in addition to whichever varieties are more or less scarce).  So, although yours is well struck and pretty well-preserved, the obverse is offcenter compared to the one that sold at 170.

Hello! I’m very grateful and I only have access to Shatalin too! But I am far from even amateur at this lark.

I reckoned it was potentially B21-55 as well.

I am contemplating sending it to be graded.

thank you all
