Identification request for token dated 1890

4 posts • 56回閲覧

Dear Numista members,

For context: someone's grandfather passed away recently, and his small collection of coins and tokens was given to me.

(Hence why there's two posts requesting help, albeit for different tokens.).

Whilst I think that the letters are either ‘BC’ or ‘BD’ (or some configuration of the two), I'm honestly not sure, and I can't seem to find any reference for this token.

I suppose that my question is: What is this? 😅

It's a game token from a “circle” casino.

Most of french casino monograms are listed, but I don't know if the monogram “BD” has been listed for the country under the sea.

“BD” not listed by Chipguide (at bottom, select Europe then Netherlands)

That's very interesting, actually!

Though, forgive a potentially daft question, but:
What is a ‘circle’ casino? I know what a casino is, but I haven't a clue what makes a casino a ‘circle’ casino. 😅

Regardless, I do appreciate your help, as I now know a lot more about this token than I did before.

"Circle" simply referred to gambling houses, some of which were private and required an annual membership fee.
