Removing PVC residue in bulk?

I, perhaps foolishly, purchased a collection of 761 German Empire and Weimar 1, 2, 5, and 10 pfennigs in the infamous Harco coin albums yesterday.  Except for a few aluminum coins, all the coins have an ugly PVC residue.  The nickel coins have a blue coloration on the details.  The coins are mostly XF to AU/Unc and the common ones have luster.

PVC cleaning guides suggest cleaning the coins individually with a few minute acetone soak, followed by rolling a Q-tip.  I am not sure I have the patience for that!  I want the coins out of the Harco *now*.

Would it be safe to put groups of 25-50 coins in sealed jars of pure acetone indefinitely?

I am thinking of pulling out 10-20 coins a night and giving them a second acetone soak in fresh individual acetone.  Can I use the same acetone for a few coins or should each coin get a fresh acetone?  My plan is to use fresh acetone-dipped Q-tips.  I start getting headaches after dipping 20 coins in fresh acetone in a single session.

Is it better to soak coins in distilled water to after cleaning with acetone, or should acetone be the last step?  These are coins that will go into cardboard staple 2x2s, and will never encounter a grading service.

What is a convenient source (in the USA) for shallow sealable jars for soaks?

Personally I would put batches of the ones with the same material in a container and after the majority of the sludge got dissolved put them in a second container with fresh acetone. If everything has gotten washed away I would put them in a bath of distilled water, dab them dry and at last put them in a shallow bath of 100% alcohol to pull out the remaining moisture.

If not all got removed repeat step two or do a bit of careful manual agitation.

This is exactly what I do, though I do this just before I add to the catalog.  Here are my steps:

  • Pull a coin from staging, note year, mint, etc, condition
  • place in a shallow bath of acetone on a cookie sheet, usually around 50 coins. Let sit, flip after a few minutes,
  • grab a coin with rubberized coin grippers, swish in a jar of distilled water, dip 10-20 seconds in 100% alcohol, set on mat to dry.
  • take dry coin and make note of condition if changed post wash.
  • photograph coin, front, back, edge
  • place in coin flip and label
  • catalogue in open numismat/numista or both, set the location and your done.
