Can you please add the following Ruling authorities for Monferrat?

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/casale-1.html

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ruler.php?id=306 1533-1536

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ruler.php?id=6796 1536-1540

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ruler.php?id=3166 1550-1566

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/ruler.php?id=3164 extend date to 1536-1566

or add 1536-1540 and  1550-1566

It's a Summary about the mint, not the issuer, hence a risk of mixing very different things.

Are we sure Charles V was at any point Marquess of Monferrat for instance, or was it just Spanish occupation with coins minted there?

it helps if there is an example coin for the ruler to add

I found the coin in question

N#479805

Here we see attribution should maybe not be Monferrat but Imperial City of Casale

@Compendium let's keep it in standby, I will get back to it once I will have a manual for these coins

If we believe Wikipedia, there was a brief period when the Paleologus line died out and Charles exerted direct rule over the Marquisat of Monferrat:

The Duchy of Montferrat was a state located in Northern Italy. It was created out of what was left of the medieval March of  Montferrat after the last Paleologus heir had died (1533) and the margraviate had been briefly controlled by the Emperor Charles V (until 1536). After that brief interlude, it passed by marriage of the last heiress, Margaret of Montferrat ….

So I think CNG was incorrect in calling it an imperial city.  Casale was always just the main mint for the Marquisat (and later Duchy) of Montferrat. So when Montferrat came under Charles' direct control, it struck coins in his name (same as places like Asti and Milan which also struck coins  in Charles' name around this time).

So, I think Charles V is just a ruling authority for Montferrat, without need to create an imperial city of Casale.

Guglielmo we already have as William X Gonzaga.  I will Add Federico (Frederick) Gonzaga.  For Margaret, we need two ruling authorities, one as duchess (1536-1540) and one as regent for Duke William.

In the french Wikipedia it States that Frederick I was Marquess de jure starting 1533 but Spanish troops controlled the territory 1533-1536

I doubt Charles V ever had the Marquess of Montferrat title?

My understanding after reading multiple website in french is that 1533-1536 is an imperial period there due to end of lineage before emperor chose Gonzaga family to take over the previous domain.

I let you decide how to tackle it but if it's a RA within Marquisate, probably an additional period issuer would help give context like “Spanish control” or “Imperial domain” or else in addition with emperor Charles

Same way on English Wikipedia.

The few coins just have CAROLVS IMPERATOR (also for Asti: N#225665 and Milan: N#305865)

In Naples he uses titles as both Emperor and King of Spain:  N#123484

We were writing at same time.

👍 I agree having a period, “Charles V Imperial Rule” is good solution.

Rather messy in Italy in 1500s

@tdziemia @Compendium this  work https://www.bollettinodinumismatica.it/#/rivista/materiali?idPrimoPiano=e5437068-45f8-40b3-b95f-db450fdd00b1 explains in detail what happened after the death Giovanni Giorgio Paleologo on the 30th march 1533

Grazie mille!

If I understand correctly, we still have Marquisate of Monferrato, but the period 1533-1536 Charles V is in control while negotiating the placement of Margareta in the position of marchioness (which begins 1536).

To me it means we are back to the simple solution of placing Charles V as a ruling authority in Marquisate ruler group, since this group is not necessarily on the Paleologus family.

That’s correct, let’s go for the simple solution

Issue was not the group imo but title

He's been entered as Charles V (Imperial rule).  As you say, I can't anywhere find that he used a local title as, say the French kings did in Milan.
