1803 5 franc coin. [解決]

I have a 1803 (AN 12), .A. (PARIS mint), BONAPARTE PREMIER CONSUL 5 FRANC coin.

Had it for nearly 40 years. I was going through junk in my basement and pulled it out. After really looking at it I noticed writing on the edge, as follows: “☆ DIEU PROTEGLA  FRANCE”. (GOD PROTECTS FRANCE)

It should read “☆ DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE”. I'll attempt to attach pics. My ? is does this count as an error coin and does that make it worth more? Any help with feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

could you measure the diameter and the weight of the coin? This will help to determine whether the coin is counterfeit or not.

I'll check the diameter today. I checked the weight at the post office while I was there and it weighed  0.8 Oz. Their scale only weighed in ounces, =  22.68 grams by their scale. I've read that a coin loses weight as it's being worn down. It should be 25 grams. I'll double check everything and post the results. Thanks for answering.

Hello and welcome to Numista!

Try posting this in the French Forum https://fr.numista.com/forum/forum1.html  There are many experts there.

How do I post this in the French Forum?

Exact same way you post it here except I'd recommend also add a google translation if you don't speak French.  I gave you the link.  Better add the weight in grams and diameter in mm.

Thank you.  I just merged the forums in my profile. I think that should do it… I think.

No, you have to make a new post.

Ok. I'm working on it. Thanks again. By the way the coin is precisely 37 mm. I'm still trying to find some one that can weigh it in grams. The 2 scales used so far weighed it at .8 ounces. Going to work on this French Forum thing.

Looks real to me. That wear is natural, although your piece has been cleaned in the past.

Nice clean-up of your original post.

I just felt I was being harsh and decided to stop it.

For once I am getting a inner voice telling me to think before I post crap. Also re reading it, the OP is obviously not computer savvy and I had no idea what country they may be in. Cheap digital scales may be very expensive or unavailable in say India or somewhere in Africa.

I stand by my comments, that the Boney 5 Francs is likely real, quite worn (VG - Fine) and cleaned in the past as it looks quite pale.

The wear is natural, as the middle of that coin is more worn than its edges and rims. Which means many people grabbed it by its middle rather than on its edges, which have little wear. This is common on larger coins, and 5 Francs in the 1800s was like a $20 - $50 note, so they saw a lot of use.

You were especially since the OP started with, “I have no clue what I'm doing.”

The overriding question is, “are there variants with edge lettering different from that on the coin page?”

I figured the French experts would have a better insight into that.

Hi moneytane. I'm guessing I got a spanking that you withdrew, thank you. You're correct. I read you could clean silver in baking soda and lemon juice. This was b4 I read you're not supposed to clean old coins. I'm J.A.D.C. (just a dumb carpenter) living in the USA. Delaware, the first state. I'm not looking to do this coin stuff full time or even as a hobby so I have no use for purchasing a digital scale. I've read that ERROR coins are worth more than average. I'm just trying to find out if I have anything of value. I'll keep looking into it and try the French Forum. Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.

Hello, I am French, there are a whole bunch of coins with the faulty edge, we find some for the year AN 12, as well as for several other years, your coin is very faulty, for the value no idea, the links that I am attaching you are professional prices, so a little expensive.

Amazing how many people could read a post in the whole 30 seconds it was up.

Anyway I get the point, you don't have to be a jerk about it.

cronos22  Thank you very much for your reply, sharing your knowledge and giving me an idea of what I have and am dealing with. At least I know I'm not sitting on a small fortune. But I now know it's worth more than the $20.00 the pawn shop offered me. Take care friend.

Wow Moneytane. I can't help being curious about what you said. But I'm probably better off not knowing. Either way thanks again for your input.
