Historians on coins and banknotes

Dear fellow collectors,

I couldn’t find any discussion about historians on coins and banknotes on the forum, so I decided to start one myself. I find this topic really fascinating as in my opinion, historians played an important role in the culture of many (if not all) states. Still, I have the impression they are usually quite outnumbered by politicians, writers of fiction or for example scientists, at least regarding the motives chosen for money. From the coins and banknotes I know, I was only able to think of the following examples:

Portuguese circulating 2,50, 5 and 25 escudo coins from 1977, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of the historian Alexandre Herculano (1810–1877).

Two 1000 Kč (Czechoslovakian and Czech crown respectively) banknotes from my country, depicting the Czech historian and politician František Palacký (1798–1876). One dated 1934, the other 2008.

So, my question is if any historians are depicted on the coins/banknotes from your country or from the countries you collect. Do you have any favourites among such pieces?

P.S.: Just for the clarification, I would understand a historian as any writer who is known to have published at least one non-fiction history work, even though he/she might have been more famous for the poetry or literary fiction, for example.

Only historians I can recall inBrazilian currencies are Câmara Cascudo, who worked mostly on ethnography, and Mário de Andrade, a poet that also published on history of art.

just search ‘historian’ and you will get quite a few hits. You can then look further for the names and see if there are any more entries with them exist that don't mention the word 'historian'.

And are these two authors generally known in Brazil? Do people also know about their historical works? I mean, I understand that Brazilian banknotes depicted quite a large number of different personalities and it would make sense if some of them were not the people everyone knows. If I am not mistaken, both Câmara Cascudo and Mário de Andrade were only depicted on a single banknote, right?

Also, I would say that the designs of both banknotes are quite nice, despite them being issued in the period of big inflation.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone says that they never heard about Câmara Cascudo or just knows him just by name. Mário de Andrade is widely known, but mainly by his works as poet, maybe in academia (especially in linguistics and arts) they are more aware of his works as an art historian.

Indeed there are a few less known personalities but mostly are well-known Brazilians as they are almost all scientists or poets/novelists.

Actually my favourite Brazilian banknote is from inflationary period:

I agree, the 200 cruzado/200 cruzeiro banknote is indeed a really nice one. I also like the fact that it is technically a commemorative banknote (given the commemorative inscription and the year of its first issue), even though it was issued in enormous quantities for the general circulation.

Thanks for pointing this out, I did not realize one can also search a term in all fields 😊

However, the aim of this discussion was not to come up with the concise list of historians on money, but rather just to chat about the whole topic (but maybe I did not explain myself clearly, sorry about that). For example, I would be interested what would one understand as a historian (the definition I used in the beginning is definitely not the only one and others might see it differently) or if historians depicted on money are generally known and praised in the respective country.
