Dear fellow collectors,
I couldn’t find any discussion about historians on coins and banknotes on the forum, so I decided to start one myself. I find this topic really fascinating as in my opinion, historians played an important role in the culture of many (if not all) states. Still, I have the impression they are usually quite outnumbered by politicians, writers of fiction or for example scientists, at least regarding the motives chosen for money. From the coins and banknotes I know, I was only able to think of the following examples:
Portuguese circulating 2,50, 5 and 25 escudo coins from 1977, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of the historian Alexandre Herculano (1810–1877).
Two 1000 Kč (Czechoslovakian and Czech crown respectively) banknotes from my country, depicting the Czech historian and politician František Palacký (1798–1876). One dated 1934, the other 2008.
So, my question is if any historians are depicted on the coins/banknotes from your country or from the countries you collect. Do you have any favourites among such pieces?
P.S.: Just for the clarification, I would understand a historian as any writer who is known to have published at least one non-fiction history work, even though he/she might have been more famous for the poetry or literary fiction, for example.
