Creation of a tag Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana)

The pronghorn is not a deer, nor a goat. It is within the separate family of Antilocapridae. On Numista, there are 7 coins, 1 banknote, and 3 exonumia depicting pronghorns. All fail to correctly identify them as a pronghorn as such a tag does not exist. They are instead tagged as goats or deer. Both are far distant relatives.

My reasoning for why such a tag is important is that while we are not zoologists, we as collectors should strive for accuracy in recording major details on the coinage we collect. Notably, the pronghorn is confined to North America with no close living relative species aside from the still distantly related Giraffe and Okapi.

My suggestion is that the tag could be called “Pronghorn or Antilocapra”

Colloquially it's called an antelope, and while I understand that's not scientifically accurate, it might be a better choice.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are fascinating animals, and I am spending 5 of the next 8 weeks in Colorado and Wyoming, and hopefully will see a few.

But there are far more coins with species of antelope on them.

There are even far more coins with a platypus on them.

I fully agree in regards to how few coins depict pronghorns there are. However, antelope are covered by the cow or bovine tag. I do however fully agree with the sentiment on the Platypus.

Additionally, pronghorns are only called antelope because they resemble some species of true antelope. They however as said before share more relation to giraffes than any species in the family Bovidae or family Cervidae. That's my leading reason as to why there should be a pronghorn-specific tag.

I appreciate your feedback and am of the same mind on the introduction of a Platypus tag. However, the pronghorn would fit significantly better in its category rather than being delegated to the deer tag. A compromise I do see coming out of this however is just that I add the keyword “pronghorn” to all relevant catalogue entries to make searching easier. The “other animal” tag exists for a reason I suppose.

Hope you enjoy your time in Colorado & Wyoming by the way! I've heard there's some awesome wildlife out there.

Antelope are not covered by the Bovine tag. They are Bovidae, not Bovinae. More closely related to goats and sheep than to cattle, but still belonging to their own branch (Antilopinae). I've been going back and forth with the referee of South African coins for awhile over this.

As for the topic of Pronghorn getting their own specific tag, the question I have is if there are enough depictions of Pronghorn on currency and exonumia to justify the creation of such a specific tag as opposed to just using the non specified "other animal" tag. Not even Antelope have their own tag yet, and they're depicted on a rather wide range of items.

I'm very sorry for the wait. I no longer have much close interest in the creation of a tag for pronghorn. It was mostly a moment of interest that has dissipated since then. If I recall, there's an odd 10 or more depictions of pronghorn on coins here in Numista's catalogue, which I now agree is far lower than such a thing would demand a tag. Thank you for taking the time to review this again, but it's no longer necessary.
