The Koinon of Macedonia or Macedonian League was an ancient political association of city-states, with the capital in the city of Beroia (modern-day Verria). The individual member cities of the Koinon, participated with representatives in political assemblies several times each year. The Koinon existed both before and after the Roman conquest. It was reorganized under the early Roman Empire, as happened to all the Koina of the period. It was transformed into an institution related to the imperial cult, with a dedicated temple and privileges granted by Emperor Nerva. The Macedonian Koinon was administered by local aristocrats who were awarded Roman citizenship. They organized and financed games and festivals in honour of Alexander and the Roman emperors.
The Koinon was also responsible for issuing coinage in the name of the Macedonians ("ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ"), which was in continuous production from the reigns of Philip V (238–179 BC) and Perseus (212–166 BC). Under Roman administration, the Koinon was granted the highly-prised title of Temple Guardians ("Neokoros"), which was inscribed on coins. Under Elagabalus, the Koinon received a second Neokorie, indicated by a “B” or “ΔIC” (double in Greek) on coins. The title was rescinded temporarily and later restored by Severus Alexander around in AD 231 AD. Using traditional ethnic symbols depicted on its coins, such as the Macedonian shield and the winged thunderbolt, the Koinon preserved a sense of its Macedonian civic identity within the province until the end of the 2nd century AD.
