Hi,

In Jansen's catalog, the counts are mentioned as e/cm or r/cm. A measurement you can NOT do, since where does the cm start and where does it end? Do you measure around the edge or do you cut the edge? We (Rsirian1 and I) have figured out, that Jansen probably counted all the reeds on the edge and then took the diameter of his coin multiplied with PI. This divided into the total reed count is then the r/cm or e/cm.

For some coins you do have different count in the same year, so this should be documented in the numista catalog, but using the total amount of reeds on the edge and no mathematical calculations. In numista not all of these coins are registered, so I tried to find them in Jansen's catalog (I might have missed some, though), and here they are:

N#4834

N#2215

N#3255

N#2218

N#5234

For the moment I think we should introduce the number of reeds on the edges for all the coins and add year lines where needed, since anybody can count and understand them. I have the feeling, that Jansen's counts were not always correct, but be that as it might be, since we can not change his catalogs. I'm setting up the documentations with the countings shown.

Here is a tentative made with 5 centavos coin from 1950

If anybody has the coarse reeded coin, I would be happy to get the count and if somebody has it as a double, I would very much appreciate to be able to set up a swap for it?

Have a nice Sunday, the other 4 documentations will follow, when ready

So here I'm back again. I have discarded the reeds per centimeter completely, I have used the counting, I have found, but as Jansen, I'm not 100% sure of them! I'll join the jpg for the coins, if somebody wants to recount.

Have fun and comments are as usual welcome.

Rejection is purely formal because no Admin action is needed here apparently :-)

Yes, admin has to decide how we count the amount of ridges on reeded coins, for the whole circumference or by centimeter of circumference?

Janson has the notion of r/cm for the Argentinian coins, and all others are counting the full peripherie. For my sake, we can have both, but admin has to decide.

Ole,

Having the terms ‘Coarse milling’ & ‘Fine milling’ should be self explanatory.

Counting the number of millings would be like trying to pull teeth without a local anisthetic.

So for this coin N#2218 we should change the 3 1975 year lines to:

without any guidance on what the 3 variants mean?  Why delete important information on how to tell which one you have (if you want to)?  That seems to be going backwards and dumb down of the catalog.

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! Read Aidan.

Did you ever try to count them per cm? I did, and it's fastidious and not precise rolling a coin over a coal paper…. see this (the 1975 50 cts with 137 reeds (21 e//cm)!
