U.S.A. 1798 Five Dollar Gold Coin [解決]

6 posts • 131回閲覧

Hello,

I was wondering about this five dollar gold coin. Does it appear to be real? It seems to be the proper size, 25 millimeters in diameter, one millimeter thick, and while my scale only goes down to the nearest gram, it measured about eight or nine grams. I did notice two “X” marks, one on either side of the date; I am not sure what that means. Additionally, the reverse has some die marks on the top of the legend.

I believe this the coin page: N#25383

Hello! Nice & valuable piece you have here, my friend(a ‘’Half Eagle'' of early 1798)! It looks genuine to me. The real weight of 8.75g.(gold,916/1000) is also in the range you said your coin is. The 2 ‘’X'' are, almost sure, some marks-scratches post minting. The other side's marks are deffects of minting process,I believe. Overall, moderate circulation wear…

Catalogue value for a Fine/VF (but with some ‘’problems'')details specimen is of about 3500 usd.👍👍👍

P.S.: This kind of old valuable coin is worth to be submitted for authentication/grading by a well-known professional service(you have some to choose from,in the U.S.).

You have the 13-star variety. Unfortunately, the obverse cannot be enlarged, so I cannot tell if you have the small or large 8 variant!

So,it is the ‘’large 8'' variety(thanks to Idolenz!)… a bit less valuable than the scarcer ''small 8''. Cat. prices for F/VF grades(details) are,as I said,3600 $ to some 4000usd.
