Bronze/copper medieval coin?

6 posts • 173回閲覧

Hi all, I am a complete novice here posting on behalf of one of my young students who is a history lover. He brought me a stack of old coins of various provenances and ages, and this one jumped out as (potentially) being much older than the rest to my eyes. I would love to be able to tell him exactly what he has here, as he didn't even really spot just how much older it looks (he's only 11). I only have these pictures I'm afraid but would be able to get more after the Christmas break. Any help greatly appreciated!

Pictures quickly cropped, if it helps anyone.

What is the diameter? Any lettering visible?

On the second side https://en.numista.com/forum/images/6399eeedd1367.jpg the circular legend in Arabic lettering is visible, the seating figure to the left has legend behind it;  could be some text under the finger.

In general the item gives impression of a token.

Thank you for the replies so far - on Reddit someone asked for rubbings so I've added them here in case they help. They're not the clearest, but hopefully better than nothing. The diameter is 25mm, but I couldn't get the weight of it unfortunately. I've added some (hopefully) clearer pictures of the obverse.

One of those rubbings appears to show a standing figure, possibly a bishop wearing a miter? (but could be other …)

So, possibly a religious medal?

Have a nice day.

Helping to learn history is exemplary.

History from the Middle Ages (as it seems from the photos of the coin) - gives us more options. Due to the metal, processing, size, gives me the opinion from the first sight that it works -as a counter, a token that was used by merchants in the Middle Ages.

It was very widespread in Germany, Austria and also the whole of western Europe.

Try looking for something similar that might be similar (but this one isn't):

The next time you take a photo, place the coin on the white paper and put the tea cup next to the coin, place the mobile phone on the cup (up to 10 cm) and take a picture of the coin from both sides.

Conclusion: a counter in my opinion-with a religious motif.
