I am new to the community and am wondering about a couple coins I have. This first one is I believe from Tiberis 2 Constantine. It is Gold and about 20mm wide. I am hoping for help identifying the year of this coin. Also, the coin appears to be smashed on the top above the head where there is some slight color change. Is this ok, or is this a red flag.
As with your other request, weight is very important in determining exactly what you have. The defect MAY have been a repair where someone at one time drilled a hole to accomodate a chain to wear as a necklace. This is what I found. Again, weight is very important to be sure.
Thanks for the response. That color difference could very well be the case. I didn't even think of that. Is that something that would drop the value of the coin? I understand condition is everything, but is this something that is common?
I am working on getting a scale. I am new to the collecting world and am slowly getting the right tools.
First and foremost is to ascertain that it is genuine and the first step to that is to determine if it is in fact gold. It may very well be a replica. I can't speak for others but on the one hand, purists want unaltered coins. Having said that, there are cases where coins are so desireable and hard to find that a repair or plug to fill a hole is acceptable if that is the best a collector can find of that type. If your coin is genuine, it is so old and I would imagine desireable to a select group of collectors , a collector who really wants that specific coin could easily overlook the plug and be happy just to have an example of that type even with the repair. Of course they will use that defect to their advantage in price negotiations. It just depends on how badly they want it.
