Hi everyone:

I think that, as has been done with German Notgeld and French Notgeld among others, local emissions during the Spanish Civil War should be independent issuers ans split them from issuer Spain, since they are coins (and banknotes) issued by City Councils (municipalities) and Councils due to scarcity of circulating currency during the war. They are coins that circulated and at Krause, each issuer is treated independently. That is why I think that, in the Coin Catalog, Spain should be classified as follows (in bold, proposal of new issuers):

SPAIN
· Spain
· Civil War (local coinage)
Sub-sections (see new list below)

· Spanish States
Sub-sections

The list of new issuers (sub-sections of Civil War) would be the following:

AMETLLA DEL VALLÈS
ARAHAL
ARENYS DE MAR
ASTURIAS Y LEÓN
CAZALLA DE LA SIERRA
EUZKADI
GRATALLOPS
IBI
LORA DEL RÍO
MARCHENA
MENORCA
NULLES
OLOT
PUEBLA DE CAZALLA
SANTANDER, PALENCIA Y BURGOS
SEGARRA DE GAIÀ

The monetary system is in all cases the same: Peseta (100 Céntimos) The flag that I think should be placed in the Civil War section would be that of the Second Spanish Republic, because, despite the fact that there are issuers that remained within the republican zone and others within the rebel zone, the general period in which they are framed is considered 2nd Spanish Republic (1931-1939)

What do you think about it?

They should be divided by region, then by city or town.

The same thing should also apply to the banknotes as well.

I used a format similar to our various Notgeld issuers (going with province then municipality) because there seems to be a bit of Notgeld within this section (although I am not sure if it can all necessarily be called Notgeld). Regardless, that was what I proposed. And with my proposal still pending... feel free to suggest any edits to that list. 0:)
Hi Sulfur, your list is incredible, when taking into account the banknotes as well, the list becomes much longer. I think it is very complete, thank you very much for expanding the information that I gave.

Glad you like it! :`

With nearly 40 coins and 100 banknotes listed on Numista, this section definitely needs a lot of work; however, without proper issuers, organization becomes difficult. And with country creation threads typically taking a while to complete, I could not give an estimate on when any of these issuers will be added...
With only 42 notgeld coins in Spain's Numista catalog, dividing them into about 20 issuers does not seem to be a comparable improvement to France (462 coins) and Germany (2,653). Actually it would be a necessary improvement if we include private issued notgeld tokens. They are hundreds, but there are currently very few in Numista, and in Exonumia, like this one from Igualada
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/exonumia144932.html

About banknotes, I have no opinion.

Hello

I think I will add these next.

I don't think we will rename "Spain - Civil War". This is consistent with other issuers that use a hyphen to define a period. That being said, it isn't consistent with "Russia - Civil war issues" for example, but we can fix this later.

There are a few typos I will fix, like "Austurias", etc. Additionally, I propose the following:

"Monterrubio de la Serena" -> "Monterrubio de la Serena, Municipality of"

"Euskadi, Government of" -> "Basque Country" (Euskadi is not English, and the government can be added as a ruling authority)

"Catalonia, Government of" -> "Catalonia" (as above, the government is an authority)

"Cantabria, Province of" -> "Santander, Province of" (this is the name it had when the last coins/notes were issued)

"Santander, Palencia, and Burgos, Interprovincial Council of" -> "Santander, Palencia, and Burgos, Provinces of" (as above, the council is a ruling authority)

"Asturias and León, Sovereign Council of" -> "Asturias and León, Provinces of" (as above, although it geographically it's a grey area, so Sovereign Council might work as well)
For me is perfect, only a little correction, is not Austurias, is Asturias ;)

I thought we were trying to move away from the hyphen though? That is why, in any country modification request I have made so far, it has involved re-naming the country to remove the hyphen (and I think, for those with the hyphen, that is a good indication of countries that still need work done). To remove the hyphen here, we would need to rename this issuer to "Spanish Civil War", and whenever we get to Russia, we could name it "Russian Civil War" for consistency.
引用する: "stratocaster""Monterrubio de la Serena" -> "Monterrubio de la Serena, Municipality of"
I missed this one's title. Thank you!
引用する: "stratocaster""Euskadi, Government of" -> "Basque Country" (Euskadi is not English, and the government can be added as a ruling authority)
On the coins, these specifically say "Government of Euskadi". If you want to change Euskadi to Basque, I would be fine with that (just make sure that typing "Euskadi" brings up Basque); however, I think "Government of Basque" or "Basque Government" would be more accruate to the issued coins.

引用する: "stratocaster""Catalonia, Government of" -> "Catalonia" (as above, the government is an authority)
I actually think the title is important here because we already have another Catalonia issuer (Principality of Catalonia). If we leave this one without a title, I imagine there would be some confusion as to which to add items under, as a generic "Catalonia" could theoretically include the principality era.

And on the banknotes, they specifically say "Government of Catalonia", hence why I went with that title (and it is also consistent with Euskadi/Basque, whether or not we include that title for that issuer).

引用する: "stratocaster""Cantabria, Province of" -> "Santander, Province of" (this is the name it had when the last coins/notes were issued)
This works for me. :)

引用する: "stratocaster""Santander, Palencia, and Burgos, Interprovincial Council of" -> "Santander, Palencia, and Burgos, Provinces of" (as above, the council is a ruling authority)

"Asturias and León, Sovereign Council of" -> "Asturias and León, Provinces of" (as above, although it geographically it's a grey area, so Sovereign Council might work as well)
The coins of these two places both specify the title "Council", and with the "Interprovincial Council"/"Sovereign Council" being the official title of these places during this coin-issuing period, I thought these would be most accurate to the coins.

And I do not see a problem with listing ruling authority titles within the country names, as long as the coins issued only covered one type of ruling authority--that is why we have many Empires, Republics, Duchies, etc., after all. So, for these particular issuers here, I would not see that as a problem.

And, if the "Asturias and León" title works, I'd especially not see a problem for including the proper title for "Santander, Palencia, and Burgos"--they are similar titles from related issuers, after all. 0:)

On a side-note: I do not recall the new guidelines saying anything about whether or not to use the Oxford comma (included in "Santander, Palencia, and Burgos" in my above list). On this site, we have not actually been using it so far (for example: "Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha"), so... perhaps that is something to consider. I, personally, like the Oxford comma because of how it removed ambiguity, but I am fine with going either way.
I recall there is a book about it but can’t find it now … but there is some books about the banknotes of this period.
Found that if it can help you:

Yes indeed, but it's more complicated than that. The problem is that this token for example would fit in "Barcelona, City of". However, the parent won't fit, because it's not a civil war issue. It's the same situation for all the local tokens for all the other issuers that are period- or issue-specific. This Linz token for example is not notgeld. So I suspect that a better name for all these parents will be "Spain (local issuers)" or "Spanish local issuers" or something similar, not period-specific. Then we can use these issuers for modern exonumia too.

That being said, I don't know yet what the plan is, so I prefer to hold on with all these renamings for now.

As before, I suspect we need to consider exonumia as well. This is a Catalan issue as well for example, albeit fantasy.

When the territory of an issuer is very specific to a particular period and doesn't match the borders of some historic areas (e.g. "China, Provisional Government of the Republic of" and "Asturias and León, Sovereign Council of") I think it's fine to use the name of the authority. But when it's a historic region (Catalonia, Basque Country), I would prefer to leave the authority for the dedicated field in the database.
引用する: "Sulfur"On a side-note: I do not recall the new guidelines saying anything about whether or not to use the Oxford comma (included in "Santander, Palencia, and Burgos" in my above list).
It depends on who added the issuer. I generally use it:

There have been a few periods in modern Spain with necessity coins locally issued, not only the war 1936-39. It would be more precise a name like Spanish local issues.
Referee for Spain, Iberia (ancient), Suebi Kingdom and Visigothic Kingdom
I don't understand the division in provinces first. The provinces never were the issuers (except for Badajoz), the issuers were the Municipalities and City, why not just order the real issuers alphabetically in stead of the division in provinces first?

As before, I suspect we need to consider exonumia as well. This is a Catalan issue as well for example, albeit fantasy.
I actually do not think we should consider Exonumia at all, in regards to the Coins/Banknotes country list.

Absolutely anything can issue a piece of Exonumia--including every single city that exists on this planet. If we start considering Exonumia, I imagine we would have to change all our states/provinces/notgeld issuers a "local issuers" issuers, and that will not help with the Coins/Banknotes sections at all--distinct numimatic areas will be unnecessarily grouped, and we would have a confusing mess. Luckily, the Coins and Banknotes issuers tend to align, hence why both of those can be considered together, but Exonumia is a whole other monster.

For Exonumia, I imagine under basically every country we could have a "Cities" issuer. "Canadian cities" and "Dutch cities" would have a lot, and for Barcelona specifically, we could have a "Spanish cities" issuer to store that city (and while there might be two Barcelonas, we have the ability to connect/duplicate issuers, so that should not be a problem).

With that being said, all my proposed issuer are based on things issued during the Spanish Civil War--in regards to Coins/Banknotes, this section makes perfect sense, which is important to consider.

zegeri mentioned modern necessity money; however, I am unaware of any of that stuff on Numista. I would need to see some examples to see if I could work them into my above list (and if so, a name change would make sense), or if they would actually do better under a Spanish Notgeld section.

I do not agree with this, but I guess I have no power to do anything otherwise.

I still think including the title on Catalonia is important though, for the sake of clarity (as we already have one Catalonia).

Perhaps this could be something to add to the new guidelines then?

Again: while I prefer using the Oxford comma, I do not really care which way we go--as long as it is consistent. 0:)
There were actually a lot more local issuers during the Spanish Civil War. I checked two references and I found 1790 in total:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KrCPM1VP7t3MWBHTz7NQHzDMjQEbVBL-FfgAlvMd8_g/edit?usp=sharing

I checked a few of these municipalities, and there seem to be images readily available online for most of them, so we could add items in Numista. These are pretty much ready to be added, but we would need someone very dedicated who can populate the catalogue, like we've got for German and Austrian notgeld.
Wow. That is definitely a lot.

The 40 I listed were all ones I was easily able to find confirmable pictures of (they all seem to be common issuers, and I imagine everything currently on Numista falls within that list). I checked a few random ones from your list and came up with nothing, so I imagine we would need someone with a related catalogue to do that sort of work.

1790? You are speaking about banknotes, aren't you?

The only 12 municipalities that made coins during the Spanish Civil War are
  • Marchena
  • El Arahal
  • La Ametlla del Vallés
  • Olot
  • Puebla de Cazalla
  • Nulles
  • Ibi
  • Cazalla de la Sierra
  • Lora del Río
  • Arenys de Mar
  • Segarra de Gaià
  • Gratallops

and some isolated territories
  • Gobierno de Euzkadi
  • Consejo de Santander, Palencia y Burgos
  • Consejo de Asturias y León
  • Consejos Municipales de Menorca

I think all coins (42) are in Numista.

Private issued tokens are a lot more. Hundreds and very few in Numista in Exonumia.

There is a good book that you can find online "Monedas durante la II república y la guerra civil española" by J. Ovelleiro. There you can find all the official coins, a lot of private tokens, and some dubious coins.

But remember that history of Spanish local coinage is much longer than those of 1936-39. For example:

The 1 Peseta & 2 Pesetas coins inscribed 'Gobierno de Euzkadi' are listed in Krause under the name 'Vizcayan Republic'.

The Spanish Civil War coins should be under 'Nationalist Zone' or 'Republican Zone' - then under the province where these places are located.

The same thing also applies to the notes as well.

is a 5 level classification for only 42 coins. Too complex for a few coins.

I prefer a more generic classification for all the necessity coins, not only a few of the Civil war (1936-1939). Some examples:
Spain > Spanish Notgeld > Civil war (1936-1939) > Catalonia, Autonomous Community of > Ametlla del Valles, City of
...
Spain > Spanish Notgeld > Peninsular war (1807-1814) > Catalonia, Intendency of > Girona, City of

Spain > Spanish Notgeld > Franco-Spanish war (1635-1659) > Catalonia, Principality of > Barcelona, City of

Local necessity coins have been issued on several occasions in Spain. We can create a division under Spain called "Spain necessity coins", "Spain local coins", or "Spanish notgeld", although the term notgeld seems only WWI related.

This proposal is only for coins and private issues already in Numista, minted for local or regional circulation.
Hello,
I'm working on this at the moment, I've prepared about 600 of 1600+ issuers for coins and banknotes, but it will take a while longer to finish everything.

However, I prefer not to structure them by war. This way, some issuers are duplicated. e.g. Girona will be under Reaper's war, Peninsular war, and Civil war (for notes). I think better to keep one Girona and add ruling authorities for each war. The ruling authorities can be connected so when you click on Reaper's war for example you can see all the coins from all issuers. Would this work for you?
How about dividing them by region as well?

Of course 'y' means '&' in Spanish.

Aidan.
引用する: "BCNumismatics"How about dividing them by region as well?

In Reapers' war all are from the same region. In Peninsular war all except one from the same region. In Cantonal rebellion only one issuer. In Civil war five regions.

Add one level doesn't seem useful, except perhaps with Civil war.

Hello everyone, I think this theme was being carried by Stratocaster, but he no longer has the functions it used to do, is there someone who is dedicating himself to this?

The 2 coins inscribed 'Euzkadi' should be under 'Vizcayan Republic', which is what it is under in Krause.

Aidan.
Krause put Vizcayan Republic under Euzkadi.

I don't know what is Viscayan Republic, the issuer of the coins was the Govern of Euzkadi (as can be read in the coins in Spanish). In any case we are not required to follow the errors of Krause.
Referee for Spain, Iberia (ancient), Suebi Kingdom and Visigothic Kingdom
I don't think that has to be the case. Vizcaya is one of the three provinces that make up the Autonomous Community of Euskadi (Basque Country in Spanish), and I believe that the Viscayan Republic has never existed, so I don't know where Krause's information comes from, but on the coins it says Government of Euskadi.

Óscar, Aidan. This theme is in the point where Andrei left. I have made other requests to the Admin team, but now pejounet is the one-man band. Currently there are 128 pending requests about countries and lots about mints, coins, banknotes, ...
Let's be patient and help him by making clear and well-documented requests.

Hello, I understand that everything takes time, there is no rush on my part, I was just curious to know how this topic was doing.

I will continue trying to help in whatever way I can, as I think I usually do.

Thank you very much for the information. ;)

Hello everyone, I'm back to this topic since from April to, the number of pages of notgeld from Spain (particularly in banknotes) has increased a lot and we have gone from about 100 banknotes to almost 1850 in the Numista Catalog (and there are still quite a few to be introduced)

I don't know if it's time to start thinking about how to organize this section since currently in Numista we have more than 650 new issuers to add, and more to still not introduced in our catalog.

I await your opinion.

Regards, Oscar

Hi!

I can make this move forward maybe :-)

Give me the list of new issuers you need for existing entries and I'll create the section and sub sections

Thank you very much, I know it's a lot of work because there are about 800 new issuers that need to be added, but I think it's worth doing.

I don't know how you want me to send it to you, I'd better start with the Provinces (that's how we agreed to classify it) of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, which are the ones with the most municipalities/issuers (more than 500).

In these new issuers of Catalonia, the Municipalities that issued coins and banknotes are already included, since I understand that the database is common.

Oscar,

That is certainly a lot of places.

Regarding the flags - it should be the flag of the Second Republic used to indicate those issued under the Republican Zone, & the flag of the Nationalists used to indicate those issued under the Francoist Zone.

Of course, the provinces & the local areas should also be indicated with their own flags - that is, if they have had them.

Aidan.

Of course, the provinces & the local areas should also be indicated with their own flags - that is, if they have had them.

Flags are something that need time in Numista, I’m still waiting since May 2021 for this one.

Always look on the bright side of life!

OK, for this volume, I'll procede by importing a batch.
We have to prepare a sheet with all informations. Here the doc I prepared for that : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DE0MAHSElWZvgJ6Sh3gY6NAvZoRvyoKi9AUE9HyRxCE/edit?usp=sharing
I put required infos for first 3 lines to show the logic.

Can you please help fill the blanks?
- do not touch red columns

- for wikidata codes, you'll find them on wikidata example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16675

- hard part is also putting right wording in three languages (careful in french with “de” or “d'” when first ltter of the city is a vowel)

Let me know if you have any question or trouble :-)

Ok, I'm on it. Please, if you can, tell me if I'm doing it correctly so I can continue.

Some of the Municipalities (especially in Catalonia) changed their names during the Second Spanish Republic. I have kept the name at the time of issuing the banknote, but in Wikidata there is a link to the current name (the old one logically does not appear).

Were all of those issuers using same currency?

Based on English names, I generated all texts for columns B to I and added a few wikicodes.

When checking and adding wikicodes, please verify the wording for french and spanish as sometimes cities are not named exactly the same way than in english, which use catalan sometimes for instance
Also, if there is an alternative name, you can add it in columns Q/R/S if you wish (I did it for Ascó > Ansó)
Good teamwork folks, let's continue !

Hello, I don't know who has done almost all the work but congratulations for the speed. As for the alternative names, does it matter which column (Q/R/S) we use?

The option that you have writte is not correct, Ascó does not have an alternative name, it is an error in Wikidata that has mixed two municipalities in Spain:

Ascó in the Province of Tarragona

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q723440

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asc%C3%B3

Ansó in the Province of Huesca

Coin referee for: Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, Marshall Islands, Moldova, Liberia and Spain

Please use “R” - English alternative names. Those columns will most probably be merged in the future anyway.

Oups sorry! I should have payed more attention.

Column Q is for alt names in French, R in English, S in spanish.

Its me who did it. I used the concatenation function of Excel which is of great help :-)

Wowww, I see that you will have to give me computer classes, hehehe.😉

I have already reviewed all the municipalities of the Province of Barcelona including alt names in French, in English and in spanish, now I have to review those of Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Many thanks for everything.

once everything is green light, then I'll test the import with provinces only, then The entire batch.

For currency, if all of them share same dates thenwe can attach samecurrency to all of them.

What is this date range?

The date range, for all the coins and banknotes in the Spanish Notgeld section, is that of the Spanish Civil War, from 1936 to 1939.

I'll let you know when I have the entire table of Catalonia Municipalities revised. When we finish with the Municipalities of Catalonia (more than 535 issuers), we will be able to continue with the rest of the Municipalities of Spain (over 290 issuers).

Jarcek

Ok, so we will create just one currency for all of them. :) Rulling authority would be split between the two sides, I presume?

Yes, that is the case, Ruling authorities will be the Second Spanish Republic (99% of banknotes and all coins except those of the 5 Andalusian Municipalities indicated at the beginning of the Topic) and Francisco Franco.

For lovers of curiosities, there are Municipalities such as La Pobla de Segur in Catalonia that have banknotes issued by both sides, from before and after the entry of Franco's troops.

Republican: N#303527

Nationalist (Franco): N#334748

Coin referee for: Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, Marshall Islands, Moldova, Liberia and Spain

Catalogue administrator

Jarcek

So some will have republic, some Franco, some both and there are some exceptions?

All banknotes and coins of the time were issued under the General Government of the Second Spanish Republic or under the Nationalist Regime of Francisco Franco.

The only possible exception could be considered the banknotes and coins of Asturias and León, since the Sovereign Council of Asturias and León declared itself independent from August 24, 1937 until the entry of Franco's troops on October 20, 1937, moment in which these coins and banknotes stopped circulating, so that, for only two months of self-proclaimed independence, they could be considered belonging to the Second Republic in my opinion.

I am not sure with “Ls”, but once you add a banknote/coin there, it might take up to 24 hours to see everything in right order.

Catalogue administrator

I found the issue : We added them with the “curved” apostrophy : ’
But when we look for them in the form, we don't find them if we use the “regular” apostrophe : '
I'll ask Xavier if it would be possible to make forms work for both apostrophes at search.

I have finished entering all the banknotes of the municipalities of Catalonia and I have found the following:

1. In the Province of Tarragona, the municipalities of Barberà de la Conca and Banyeres del Penedès lack the “Municipality of”.

2. It would be good to add the period of Francisco Franco (1936-1939) as was done with the Spanish Republic. There are few associated banknotes and coins, but there are some.

3. I forgot to include 4 Municipalities: Cornellà de Llobregat, Ribes del Penedès and Sallent are missing in the Province of Barcelona, and Espinelves are missing in the Province of Girona. If you need me to fill in these 4 municipalities, we can do it like the rest.

If you see fit, we can open a Topic “Spanish Notgeld” in Referees Section where we can add all the Municipalities that are missing, so as not to load this Topic anymore.

Yes, I understand you. Some 130-140 more municipalities and some territories will still remain to be created, but of these pending municipalities (Valencian Community and Andalusia) I have yet to introduce banknotes, so it will be a little later.

If you can (and only if you can), I think it would be nice to create these last ones that I've sent you and you have my promise that the rest will all be one last time.
