Lore Börner

Lore Börner (1928-2011) was a German art historian and numismatist closely associated with the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, where she was a pioneering figure in the study of modern medals. She was the first academically active woman in the institution's history and played a key role in the postwar restoration and development of the collection.

Börner studied art history at Humboldt University and joined the Münzkabinett in 1956. She became deputy director and head of the department for modern coins and medals in 1964, notably overseeing research on Renaissance and Baroque medals. Her scholarly contributions include the Bestandskatalog of Italian medals in the Berlin collection and the influential book Deutsche Medaillenkleinode des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts.

Known for her dedication and collegial spirit, she remained active in the field even after her retirement in 1990. Börner was an honorary member of the Numismatische Gesellschaft zu Berlin and a member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medaillenkunst.
