Dollar coins are not popular at all. The current presidential series is popular with collectors but doesn't circulate, most vending machines won't accept them. There are billions sitting at the clearing banks. It seems likely that the mint will produce only small numbers of coins in future just so collectors can complete the series.
The SBA dollar has the additional drawback of being a very ugly coin featuring a very ugly woman who most people have never heard of.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
I've found it to be quite cumbersome to carry around more than a couple of dollar coins. Though on rare occasions I have been known to cash out a $20 bill and walk around with a pouch full of "gold" just to feel like a pirate :)
"What we are is not as important as what we aren't"
One of the problems with the SBA was the size and weight was too close to a quarter. Some jerks who where buying from blind vendors would give them quarters but tell them they were SBA's. For them it was almost impossible to tell the difference by feel.
I never tried to use them in a machine but I've seen some with the "accepted tender" stickers.
I've got a couple, they are ugly overall. And the present dollar coins, as aforementioned, just aren't as popular as they had hoped. Here in Switzerland, the normally circulated coins go up to 5 Franken. The lowest bill is a 10CHF. Imaging carrying around $5 $2 and $1 coins? Pretty normal here.
The Whitman 2014 Red Book says that it's size was too similar to a quarter and thus didn't go over too well. Minting ceased from 1981 to 1998 . In 1999 additional pieces were made to meet the needs of vending machines. I personally LOVE this coin!
Cerulean is right - the Susan Anthony coin was never withdrawn from cirulation. [ Carter quarter] I got about 12 of them in my change for the last month. I throw all my change in a box then sort and roll. It's like the Ike dollar - I have 5 of them in the box too.

I just used an Ike dollar at the market. The cashier looked at it and said " this is a half dollar?" I don't think she had ever seen one before.
If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything
引用する: ALLRED1950That ok about a year ago i used some 2 dollar bills and the casher call her manger to see they could still take them.
LOL There is currently legislation in the US Congress to do away with the paper dollar currency and replace it with a dollar coin. There are several different reasons behind this. One is that it is cheaper to make dollar coins in the long run because they last longer than paper bills. The "life expectancy" of a dollar bill is 2 years - whereas a coin will generally last at least 10 years. Another is that because the dollar coin has been "less than popular" - there are millions of them sitting in Federal reserve vaults. SBAs would be resigned to collector status and all circulation dollar coins after them would still be legal tender. The dollar bill would be fazed out in 4 years.
