Most coins today are round. Holed and heptagonal coins are relatively common as well. Others, such as oval, scalloped, and triangular coins are more unusual and often associated with non-circulating novelty or collector's items.

The table below lists a range of basic shapes used in Numista to describe the shape of coins and exonumia. Novelties and more specialised shapes are not included in this list.
