Ceramic is a material produced by shaping and firing inorganic compounds at high temperatures, most commonly clay-based mixtures. Ceramics are chemically stable and they can be produced with a wide range of colours, but they are brittle and can chip or break, which limits their suitability for coinage. Ceramics are rarely encountered in numismatics, except for a few tokens, casino chips, and novelty collector coins.
