Chromium (chemical symbol Cr) is a hard metal with a bright silvery appearance and excellent corrosion resistance. In numismatics, chromium is rarely used as a coin metal on its own. Instead, it is mainly encountered as an alloying element in stainless steel (where it provides rust resistance) and as a thin plating to give a bright, silvery surface and better resistance to tarnish and wear.
