Acmonital (from Italian acciaio monetario italiano) is a stainless-steel alloy developed for coinage, based primarily on iron with a 17.5-19% chromium content and other minor elements. It was introduced for Italian coins in 1939, notably for low denominations, as a durable and low-cost material during periods of restricted access to traditional coinage metals. Depending on the exact formulation, acmonital issues may be magnetic or non-magnetic.
