Cardboard is a paper-based material made from layered fibres. It is hardly suitable for coinage, since it is not durable and deteriorates quickly with handling and exposure to moisture. Despite these limitations, it has occasionally been used for emergency scrip and provisional tokens during periods of coin shortage or economic crisis, notably in some European countries during and after both World Wars, when rapid production and low cost were more important than long-term circulation.
