Abstract

This article presents a catalogue, die study, and commentary on Tiribazus's Cilician staters showing the figure in the winged disc on the reverse. The coins were minted in the 380s BC while Tiribazus was co-commander of the Achaemenid force suppressing a revolt on Cyprus. The catalogue is the first that gathers examples from mints other than Issus; it also re-examines the corpus for Issus begun by Brindley (1993). The historical context and hoard evidence permit the amendment of the production date of these coins, while the variation between legends (not previously explored) clarifies questions regarding the significance of the Greek ethnics and the use of Aramaic.
