The Currency and Medals of Newfoundland

THE YEAR 1983 is the 400th anniversary of the claiming of Newfoundland for Britain by Sir Humphrey Gilbert in 1583. It is appropriate that this book on the currency and medals of Newfoundland should be produced in so significant a year.

The history of Newfoundland's currency spanned only a portion of those 400 years, but it nevertheless became an intricate part of the fabric of life among the early fishermen and settlers. In a sense it was a cornerstone of the economic history of the island.
The Governors of the J. Douglas Ferguson Historical Research Foundation are pleased to be associated in this way with the Sir Humphrey Gilbert 400th Anniversary celebrations and extend to all the people of Newfoundland sincere congratulations on such an outstanding event.
