Die Variants:
Studies of 1910-1912 examples have shown three slight variants of the serif of the numeral 1 : "Wedge Serif", "Square Serif", and “Thin Rectangle Serif” (longer square serif).
The “Wedge serif”, appears in 1910 issues and some 1911 issues; the characteristics are:
– The top part of the first “1” has a wedge shaped tip which goes slightly past the leftmost side of the foot.
For the 1911 issues, the second “1” has a knobbed serif going slightly upward, unlike the 1910 issues where it is also a wedge serif.
The “Square Serif”, appears exclusively in some 1911 issues; the characteristics are:
– The tip of the top part of the first “1” is more thicker and squared, and almost exactly aligned with the leftside of the foot.
– The top parts of the second and third 1's are more blunt.
The “Thin Rectangle Serif”, appears in the 1912 issues and some 1911 issues; the characteristics are:
– The tip of the first “1” is squared but thinner than the “square serif,” and, like the “wedge serif” goes slightly past the leftmost side of the foot.
– The top part of the second “1” is blunt while the third “1” is more pointy.
For the 1911 issues, the length of the serifs are shorter compared to the 1912 issues, which are slightly longer.

Below is a comparison for the Wedge Serif for the 1910 and 1911 issues and the Thin Rectangle Serif for the 1911 and 1912 issues.
Sea Salvaged US-Philippine Peso Coins
In 1942, over 16 million Pesos in silver were thrown into the sea near Corregidor to avoid being captured by the invading Japanese forces. majority of those thrown where dated 1907 to 1912 Peso (small type).
Since the war, over 10 million Pesos have been salvaged but are typically corroded due to being in saltwater for a long time. As of 2007, an estimated 3.5 million still remains under seawater. It is therefore typical to see listings in ebay anywhere online about “sea salvaged” US-Philippine One Peso coin and might be even underweight.
