Unconfirmed short story:
Soldiers (Americans) were entitled to a free first haircut, then they had to buy a sixpence token (6 pennies) which they had to carry with them at all times. This was to ensure that a haircut could be carried immediately after receiving an order from a senior officer to "get your hair cut".
