Obsolete currency, also known as "broken bank notes", is paper money issued by entities other than the federal government, such as state banks, merchants, and railroads. Banks often oversupply notes, which can lead to bankruptcy during financial crises. The National Numismatics Collection has several obsolete bank notes from these failed banks.
Unlike the $1 and $2 denominations, the $3 note features a singular and large red denomination overprint.
