マチュピチュは、ペルー南部の東コルディリェーラ、標高2,430mの山稜に位置する15世紀のインカ帝国の城塞都市である。クスコの北西80km、聖なる谷の上に位置するウルバンバ州マチュピチュ地区にある。ウルバンバ川が流れ、コルディリェーラ山脈を貫き、熱帯山岳気候の渓谷を形成している。
