ベニート・フアレス (1806-1872)はサポテカ人として生まれ、幼い頃に孤児となり、独学でスペイン語と法律を学び、やがて政治家として大統領にまで上り詰めた。改革戦争と第二次フランス介入を成功させ、メキシコの主権を確立した。

フランシスコ・I・マデロ（1873年～1913年）は裕福な地主であり、30年以上メキシコを支配していたポルフィリオ・ディアスを打倒し、メキシコ革命の最初の勝利者であった。1911年の選挙で勝利した後、政治的に孤立し、将軍の一人ビクトリアーノ・ウエルタに簒奪され殺害された。今日、彼は国家の殉教者として記憶されている。
